A day spent traveling can be taxing and tiring but it often doesn’t compare to the effects that we suffer after the flight is complete and we’ve reached our final destination. Jet lag can be a problem for any traveler who is crossing through more than one time zone.
It is the result of our internal clock, referred to as circadian rhythm, being disrupted and causing symptoms such as sleeping problems, emotional and mental upset, disorientation or digestive issues. Imagine how wonderful it would be to arrive revived? There are some solutions which seem to help with the symptoms.
Melatonin and Reducing Jet Lag
Melatonin supplements are thought to help with jet lag since it is the hormone melatonin which regulates our circadian rhythm on a regular basis. When we cross through time zones and experience light during periods of normal darkness and sleep our bodies regulating system is thrown off and we begin to experience jet lag. Melatonin release is stimulated by light so once we go to bed and our body experiences dark the melatonin is released. Take a .5mg supplement one hour prior to going to bed for 3 nights to reduce symptoms.
Homeopathic JetLag Solutions
While there are many options for the traveler seeking an alternative solution to jet lag, the most popular by far is “No Jet Lag”. This product can be found in pharmacies, grocery stores or natural health stores. “No Jet Lag” – “Jet Ease” in Australia – is said to reduce a variety of symptoms including sleeplessness, sleep interruptions, emotional stress, nausea, bloating and anxiety. As with all homeopathic remedies, be sure to follow the dosage recommendations. Another option is an essential oil blend in a roll on from Saje Natural Wellness called ‘Arrive Revived’, available for purchase online (however, be mindful that this will be shipped from America and their website says can be long delivery times of up to 3 months… Having said that they have some lovely looking travel type remedies so it might be worth looking at their full range…)
JetLag Home Remedies
Many believe that good old-fashioned home remedies are enough to eliminate jet lag symptoms. Getting plenty of rest prior to the flight, avoiding alcohol and caffeine before and during a flight and continuing with your normal exercise routine are top of the list for beating jet lag. Sunlight appears to be a major contributor in minimizing the effects of jet lag so get outside as much and as often as you can.
Other tips
Short acting sleeping pills can then be used for a limited time, to help initiate sleep at a sensible local time when are not feeling sleepy, and to help you get back to sleep when you wake during the middle of the “night”.
Take your time
Don’t expect that you will hit the ground running on your arrival. Give yourself a break and understand that it will take a little time to get back into normal sleep patterns and plan for this in your travel plans. ie. If you arrive first thing in the morning, have some plans during the day which will enable you to get through the full day so you can get back on track with your sleep that night. Conversely, if you arrive at night, plan your travel so on arrival you will hit your pillow asap!
Meditation
Never underestimate the use of meditation and other relaxation exercises which can help recharge you during your travels. After all, if it is a holiday you are on, it is a great chance to relax and recharge your batteries!
We do hope the above provides some good, practical advice on top tips to beat jetlag – after all, we are all keen to make the most of our trips – whatever the reason/occasion!
